Do I Need A Food Scale?

Yes. The short answer is yes.
Portion sizes are massive in the United States, and if someone were to offer you normal sized portions, you would call them cheap. It’s part of our culture to show value and generosity with volume. With all that generosity, our ability to recognize what a healthy portion size is out of whack.

When you’re working on weight loss, which seems like at least 50% of the American population at any given time, portions is key. In fact, portions is mission critical. If you eat too much, even of perfectly healthy foods, you will not lose weight. This is where the food scale comes in.
Measuring your food, like a hawk, for several weeks or months on end retrains you to recognize normal food portions. But it takes time to reset the standard in your mind. So if you should be eating 4 ounces of yams based on your calculated meal plan, and you put a whole small yam on your plate, you’re eating twice what you should. Maybe even 4 times as much. A four ounce serving of a starchy vegetable is a small amount, like two slices. If you didn’t have a food scale, you would be shooting yourself in the foot and wondering why the scale refuses to move.

Don’t sabotage yourself, or don’t let our culturally massive food portions sabotage you. Weigh it. Every time. Weigh your chicken to be sure you’re getting the full 4 ounce portion, you need the protein for muscle maintenance. Weigh the yams, so you don’t accidentally quadruple your portion. And while you’re at it, use an actual measuring spoon for your fats! One tablespoon of olive oil is not the same as “a little pour”.
Fats are more than twice as calorie dense as protein and carbs, so even the slightest over-exaggeration here can ruin all your efforts. Yes, I measure the olive oil I put on my foods, with an honest and clean one tablespoon. Don’t cheat here with the oils, it’s tempting to think that it’s good for you, or harmless. But remember, what is a medicine in low doses can be a poison in high doses.

Beautiful healthy food, eaten in excess, will still keep you heavy. Did you know that the strongest evidence we have for human longevity studies is calorie restriction? There is no medicine, no pill, no supplement, nothing more effective in getting and staying healthy than being in a caloric deficit (being on a reduced calorie diet). Period. So yes, get a food scale. And use it!
